How context of the organisation helps

In the ISO management system standards, context of the organisation is the internal and external issues that are relevant to the organisation’s purpose and that affect its ability to achieve the intended results. The register is that record. Controls describe what the organisation does. Context of the organisation describes the situation those controls sit in: issues inside the organisation, such as structure, resources, or systems, and issues outside it, such as law, market, technology, or suppliers.

What a context item is for

Each item says what the issue is and why it matters to the management system. An owner monitors it. Categories, which the organisation defines, keep internal and external issues in the same language. Status shows whether the issue is still being captured, still applies, or has been retired.

The counts show how many issues are on the register, how many are internal, how many are external, and how many are active. That is the picture a management review can start from, rather than a fresh list each time.

When you need to change it

The context register and context categories describe the fields and the category list.
